one of the few hotels to survive the great earthquake of 1906, the palace is one  s.f.'s oldest hotels, and a place i had always wanted to visit for their famous "garden court jazz brunch."  so off we went a couple sundays ago to take in the beaux-arts architecture and dine in luxury for the afternoon.  the food was good and there was a huge selection,  but what really made it for both of us was the gorgeous plate glass ceiling.  i'm surprised i didn't hurt my neck staring up, because thats all i did the whole time.   oh,  and within the first 5 minutes, on our way to the buffet, damien accidentally ran into a waiter who ended up dropping his loaded tray.  dishes and glasses went crashing to the marble floor and i'm sure you can just imagine  the echo in a place like this.   being the dutiful wife that i am, i casually slinked away like we weren't together of course.
at any rate, it was definitely worth every penny to be able to sit in this amazing space, which used  to  be the horse and carriage entrance back in the day. if you end up going to the hotel make sure to have a cocktail in the "pied piper" bar first.  there's beautiful maxfield parrish painting that's a must-see.
